My Heritage

I am very proud of where I came from. I was born in Sumter, SC and I consider it my hometown even though I only lived there a couple of years. I then moved to Myrtle Beach where I lived until I came to college in Columbia, SC. But to really understand who I am, I look at where my family has come from.
Starting with my mother's side: Her father's grandfather came over from Ireland. Their last name was McKinney, but when they came to the states they dropped it to just Kinney (my mother's maiden name). I believe there is some English descent on her mother's side, but they are mostly Irish. This may explain why I have such a fascination with red hair; I have always wished my hair was red, but since I can't help that, I have wished for red-haired, blue-eyed children. My friends think it's silly, but I think red-heads are special.

On my father's side of our family lineage, we have found many lines connecting us to French Hugenots. My grandmother is big on researching and tracing our heritage, so I definitely trust that this is correct. This also amuses me because my foreign language of choice is French. I took 3 levels of it in HS, and two classes in college. I hope to study abroad in France next Spring, working on my goal of becoming a fluent speaker. The classes I take there will hopefully earn me a minor. We'll see how that goes!
So that is me: Half English/ Irish, half French Hugenot. Interesting combination....
